Who are you and where do you originate from?
We are Nothing North of Alaska, an acoustic duo comprising Greg on vocals (and sometimes ukulele) and Tim on guitar. Greg is from Newport and Tim is from Cardiff.
How did you get into playing music?
Greg: I have been playing music all my life. I started off playing classical piano music and still do. I used to love sitting at the piano and singing but only recently started thinking about myself as a proper singer.
Tim: I really got into music when I got my first guitar. I wrote and sang songs pretty much all the time, with Greg in the studio as my producer, until I got vocal damage about a year ago. I didn’t want to quit, so the only thing was to brush up on my guitar skills and get a singer to fill in. Greg didn’t seem to be doing anything useful at the time so he seemed like the perfect choice. Oh and he’s also quite good...
Do you write your own material?
Tim: We love getting in the studio and writing songs so we try and get as much of our own material into gigs as we can. We are both massive perfectionists though so it has to be completely right before we can bear to share it with anyone.
How would you describe your style of music?
Greg: I think we both have different tastes in music. I’m much more folk based and Tim is all about the country music and I think both genres contribute to our style.
The eventual result is music quite heavily based on the acoustic guitar with some (hopefully) catchy pop influences but we try and throw in a banjo or a lap steel from time to time just to keep Tim happy.
What’s your best live experience so far?
Greg: When you are starting out, some of the smaller gigs you get can be pretty great in their own way. We recently played the acoustic session at Slugfest – a seriously heavy metal festival in Abertillery. It was amazing what an awesome reception we got despite how way off the demographic was. When you finish a song on the ukulele and acoustic guitar in front of 50 hammered metalheads and you end up getting a round of applause, it gives a pretty good feeling of satisfaction.
What are you working on at the moment?
Tim: We are basically working on making as much music as we possibly can. We love doing the Yo utube music videos and we have a huge laugh recording our tracks in the studio. Nothing beats performing live though so we are basically working on getting as many gigs as we possibly can.
Where can we catch you live?
Greg: As Tim said, we are in the process of booking as many gigs as we can get our hands on. We are pretty excited about our new material and generally update all gig info on our Facebook and Twitter so it would only make sense to ‘like’ and follow us on there to find out the answer to this question.
