Friday night was definitely good music night as Newport Riverfront’s studio played host to the singer songwriter collaborative of Amy Wadge and Pete Riley. Amy and Pete began their current tour on March 9th and the intimate setting in the Riverfront Studio was an excellent venue for Pete and Amy to play their first Welsh date.

The gig started off in fine form with an opening set played by singer songwriter Ffred Jones. Ffred played tracks from some of his previous releases before playing his new Single Lions in the Dark from his forthcoming album The Welsh Whiskey Society.

Following a brief interval, Amy and Pete arrived in the studio launching into songs from their new album Rivers Apart. Amy remarked that both she and Pete were the male and female musical equivalent of each other. It was clear from the outset that the pair are indeed a classic musical pairing in the same league as Carole king and jams Taylor, as they provided harmonious and intricate performances on guitar and piano of 9 Miles of Bad Road, Wasted days, One More Time and Hurricane.

The song Don’t Want to Go to Bed about Amy’s eldest daughters growing independence also received a nod of understanding from parents of young children in the audience.

An encore of three songs including Rivers Apart left the audience with some truly special memories of a great gig.
