NEWPORT East AM John Griffiths will be among 1,000 runners racing in the Newport half marathon this Sunday.

Mr Griffiths, 56, a veteran of six London marathons, will take part in the St David's Hospice Care event and has set himself a time target of one hour and three quarters.

The Welsh Government minister for the environment and sustainability said: "It's brilliant for the city of Newport that St David's Hospice Care has organised this fabulous event and also that it has attracted such tremendous backing from competitors in this its first year."

St David's Hospice Care chief executive Emma Saysell said: "We're thrilled that John is taking part in our inaugural half marathon and I look forward to welcoming him back home when he crosses the finishing line."

The event starts at 9am from the Newport International Sports Arena in Spytty. Organisers are looking for volunteers to help on the day.
