THERE is heavy traffic on the M4 this evening due to a car fire.

No one was seriously injured in the incident but the driver and the passenger were both taken to hospital for precautionary measures.

It happened underneath Grove Park bridge on junction 25 at around 5.30pm and the car has since been recovered by police.

One lane of the M4 westbound on junction 25 Caerleon to junction 26 Malpas was closed, and diversion routes are currently in place including the A4042 down Malpas Road, rejoining at junction 26 of the M4.

Any potential damage to the bridge will be assessed in due course, according to Gwent Police.

Duty Inspector Huw Jones said motorists should allow themselves more time if they intend to drive in the area.
