STEEL fences have started to go up enclosing the Celtic Manor ahead of the Nato summit next month as Gwent police have also confirmed road and footpath closures which will be put in place.
The 20km of fencing, which is part of Gwent Police’s security operation, can be spotted along the M4, around the Celtic Manor and in key venues in Cardiff.
Gwent Police also confirmed the road and footpath closures taking place during the first week in September.
Two roads will be closed for six days and all footpaths that cross the Celtic Manor Resort will be closed throughout the event.
Catsash Road will be closed from the junction on Belmont Hill on the B4236 to the junction with Roman Road and Bulmore Road will be closed from The Bell pub in Caerleon to the junction of Abernant Road from 10pm on Sunday, August 31 until 7am on Saturday, September 6. Police say these are the only two road closures in Newport currently planned for the event.
Paths closed to the public include the Usk Valley Walk and pathways coming from Chepstow Road, Langstone, Bulmore Road, Catsash Road, Abernant Road and Roman Road.
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Armitt, who is leading the policing and security operation for the summit, said: “As the Nato summit draws closer we are finalising our preparations for the policing operation which will help ensure the safety of local residents and delegates.
“Whilst we are doing all we can to minimise any potential disruption to local residents and businesses the scale of the security operation required will inevitably cause some disruption.
“We are grateful to the public for their continued support and understanding, and apologise in advance if any of our activity causes any disruption or inconvenience to them.”
Meanwhile, three Welsh companies have been awarded contracts to help deliver the summit. The companies will be working alongside events agency M, which will be delivering the production.
Floorex, of Cwmbran, will be providing and fitting more than 7,000 square metres of flooring and Barnaby Road Markings, of Caerphilly, will be working on the internal layout at the Celtic Manor.
Aggreko, of Port Talbot, will be providing the additional power required to supply venues across the site including for the 1,200 international media expected to attend.
The summit is taking place on September 4 and 5.
