AS the Argus launches its search for Gwent's young artist of the year, an art workshop will take place at the Project Space at Commercial Street, Newport tomorrow.

From 10am to 2pm, a free workshop will be hosted by Charles Penwarden, the Art, Media and Design Course co- ordinator at the University of South Wales.

The workshop coincides with the Argus’ Gwent Young Artist of the Year competition and the University of South Wales will offer this year’s overall winner the opportunity to attend an art masterclass at the university.

Mr Penwarden said that Saturday’s workshop will focus on how to generate and build on creative ideas in art.

He said: “This will be our first workshop, but we hope to form breakaway groups on the day if enough people are in attendance.

“I saw last year’s Gwent Young Artist of the Year award and it sounded like a terrific idea. We’re delighted to help nurture the next generation.”

Kate Mercer, who works at the Project Space, said that she hopes the project will encourage creativity on a daily basis.

A second workshop is planned at the Project Space on November 1.
