A TORFAEN primary school celebrated a milestone in its six year history – its first wedding between two current pupils on its roll.

Year two students from Ysgol Panteg, Elijah Hathaway and Sienna Halpin, both seven, tied the knot at Griffithstown’s St Hilda’s Church, in front of their friends and family.

The bilingual service for the newlyweds, carried out in English and Welsh, was officiated by Reverend Anne Golledge, although none of the legal requirements for marriage were completed.

“We had a little glitch with the music but there were no cold feet otherwise in what was our first school wedding,” said Angharad Griffiths, the head of the foundation phase at Ysgol Panteg.

“The children have organised everything and this all came from the children reading a book, who were all fascinated by it.”

The idea of the wedding, which the pupils themselves wanted to create, followed the year two class reading The Wedding of the Two Scarecrows in Welsh.

“It was great to see the children using their Welsh skills as well, and we were very fortunate to have one of the older boys in our school reciting the words in Welsh as the reverend doesn’t speak Welsh,” added Miss Griffiths.

“This was our first wedding ever but who knows, there could be another one next year. But it was great for the children to be able to practice their Welsh in a fun way.”

The school’s choir performed Calon Lan and after the ceremony, the primary school husband and wife attended a mini party held in the church hall adjoining the church.

“This was my first wedding and it went well,” said Sienna, who said that she didn’t feel nervous at all on her big day.

Elijah added: “I think this will make me less nervous in the future when I am older and getting married again.”
