FIRE crews fought a fire in a Monmouthshire village barn for more than an hour last night.

Smoke could be seen three miles away from the fire which started in a barn in Pen Y Cae Mawr, near to Newbridge on Usk in Monmouthshire.

The wooden barn, which was "well alight" when firefighter arrived at the scene, contained a caravan, domestic equipment and gas bottles.

The 999 call came in at 8.23pm last night and fire crews from Maindee and Usk rushed to the scene.

They fought the fire using a main jet, hosereel and portable pump for more than an hour and were still at the scene damping down the barn until 11.36pm.

Jennie Griffiths, head of South Wales Fire and Rescue control, said the fire was caused accidentally.

Crews will be back at the barn this morning to reinspect the scene.
