100-tonne plastic fire at Gwent valley estate near Rhymney

Firefighters have now fully left the site after putting the fire out by 7.30pm.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a site visit to inspect what caused the fire will take place tomorrow.

UPDATE 5pm

MORE THAN 40 fire service personnel are tackling a large blaze involving 100 tonnes of waste plastic materials at an industrial site in Caerphilly county borough.

Six crews, from Tredegar, Ebbw Vale, Brynmawr, Rhymney, Treharris and Merthyr Tydfil have been working on putting out the fire for for more than two hours since being called at 2.51pm.

Due to the plumes of black smoke from the site in Rhymney's Heads of the Valley's Industrial Estate, homes nearby have been told to keep all windows and doors closed while the fire is ongoing.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service stated that PVC material outside a building on the Heads of the Valley's Industrial Estate was alight.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "We are using six pumps and three water bowsers as we are committed in tackling the blaze.

"All relative agencies have been informed and on-site liaison is taking place. Anyone driving or travelling near the vacinity of the site should be carfeul due to the smoke.
