NEW police recruit 'PC Rain' helped keep Gwent's streets quiet on Sunday, as the wet weather deterred Hallowe'en anti-social behaviour.

Officers across the force area also took part in foot patrols to discourage behaviour like egg-throwing and fireworks being set off.

The force said that while it did not collect data on Hallowe'en-specific anti-social behaviour, Gwent Police "didn’t experience any significant issues" on October 31.

"We’d like to thank those who acted responsibly, keeping our communities safe, while enjoying themselves," a Gwent Police spokesperson said. "In the run up to Bonfire Night we are reminding people to again, enjoy yourselves safely, be mindful of others and act responsibly."

The bad weather across most of South East Wales played a part, too, in preventing bad behaviour, with officers in Newport joking that 'PC Rain' had been assisting them with their patrols.

Gwent Police also ran its annual Operation Bang project to minimise seasonal anti-social behaviour and hand out 'no callers please' signs to residents who don't want to be visited by trick-or-treaters.

Speaking ahead of the Hallowe'en weekend, chief superintendent Mark Hobrough said: "Hallowe'en has in the past proved to be an increased time of demand for the police, so you may see more officers out in your streets."

He added: "Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage all need to be treated effectively and will not be tolerated."
