Very difficult conditions during the week which was reflected in the low number of catch returns. However for those that did fish the catches was excellent and several limit bags were taken. Malcolm Reed was on top form bagging 5 fish-9lb 12oz whilst fishing from the tump. Visitor S.Maddern chose to fish from the north bank and caught 5 fish-11lb, but Ron Southwood could only catch 1 fish but it weighed 2lb 6oz. Peter Dent took advantage of a morning session netting 3 fish-6lb 1oz but club chairman Roger Barnes could only manage to catch 1 fish for 2lb 15oz. From a morning boat session Bill Smith did catch one fish-2lb 7oz before rain halted any further fishing prospects. Hopefully an end to the cold weather should encourage the fish to start feeding on top and anglers will be able to use floating lines again. Top flies included damsels, cat’s whisker and the Montana. Boats available booking available from the fishery. You must provide your own life jackets.

The spring is definitely a late one and trout in both lakes and rivers have been reluctant to rise. A few nice fish, including a brace of 3½ lb rainbows have been taken mostly on small flies such as Buzzers and Hares Ear.

Oliver Burch made a long promised trip to the to the river Teifi at Lampeter. His efforts were in vain and spent the whole day fishing down a stretch which looked perfect brown trout water, all fast gravel runs, he could only manage a couple of small ones by Czech nymphing with a heavily leaded cast.
More success has been reported from the Wye and Usk, where there have been some large Dark Olive hatches during the afternoons. The Foundation now reports 7 spring salmon from the Wye, spread out along the middle beats. There are a few runs, what is interesting, is that one of those reported fish was reliably estimated at 35 pounds. That is the kind of Wye springer which keeps anglers trying – abundant once, but still occasionally there to be contacted if you are lucky. The voluntary catch & release is gaining momentum with many anglers returning their catch in 2006.

Strong east and northerly winds towards the end of the week cooled things off and made casting more challenging.  Lee Oliver from Bridgend had a brace from Waycock including one of 5lb and David Llewellyn, Pencoed went home with a 5 lb 5½ lb rainbow which took a red daddy. Tim Walton from Usk landed four brownies up to 5lb from Goldsland on an olive daddy, and Stuart Williams of Barry had his three fish limit from Goldsland on a viva. Malcolm Puntis of Penarth landed his first ever fish, weighing 2 lb 7 oz, on an orange fritz. On Goldsland Tony Farnham of Llantwit Major returned nine rainbows and a brownie.

Blagdon] Although the fresh NE winds have made boat fishing a little more difficult, Blagdon has continued its excellent start with plenty of fish coming from most areas. Bank fishermen have done particularly well especially from Butcombe and the North bank where some huge fish have been reported included in big bags of fish. Best fish from the Lake so far is an 8.14 rainbow caught by Malcolm Fisher. This fish only narrowly beat others of 8.06, Dave Payne and 8.02 by Phillip Browne All these fish fell to small black or black and green lures. The boats have mostly headed for the shelter under the North shore but when conditions have allowed plenty of fish are coming from Home Bay, Cheddar Water and Green lawn.

Chew lake
Catches have slowed very slightly this week as the temperature fell and the winds increased, but some marvelous sport has still been enjoyed from both bank and boat. The North and East shores have been the most productive areas for the boats and fish have been caught on small lures and nymphs. The Picnic Areas, Woodford and Herons have been popular banks with the NE winds but the fish seem to have moved farther from the shore making long casting necessary for full bags. Similar patterns and methods to Blagdon. Steve Shute took an 8.14 brown while fly-fishing for pike from a boat. The fish was returned unharmed to the water.
Better fishing at the Barrows this week. Fish have been coming from most areas on both 1 & 3. There are plenty of over-wintered fish coming in with the average weight 4 ounces more the stocking weight. All methods and patterns are working well with a few fish showing on the better evenings.
With more fish being stocked this week ready for Easter, and good weather forecast, the superb early season fishing should continue. There are still a few boats available on both lakes for the weekend and this week sees the start of our fishing tuition.
