IT WAS a Royal affair with a bit of a twist for these Newport students as binbags and Union Jacks were used to create an alternative outfit for the Royal bride and groom-to-be.

The outfits were among 200 dazzling styles to be displayed at the Coleg Gwent City of Newport campus’ annual hair and beauty show which this year was inspired by the iconic quirky style of film director Tim Burton.

Edgy hair and wacky make-up seen in the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Beetlejuice was brought to the stage as the hair and beauty students showed off their creativity and talent.

Outfits modelled included Level two beauty therapy student Sabrina Sidney’s creation which was based on Mars Attacks and used fleshy colours to represent the brain.

Household items including tin foil and CDs finished off the outfit.

Hairdressing student Adrianne Williams used the inspiration of film Beetlejuice to create a spider outfit using black plastic bags.

Paying tribute to the big day at the end of this month, the finale then saw hair student Jasmine Dean's creation of a wedding gown styled from layered white bin bags and complete with Union Jack as a possible alternative for Kate Middleton.

Multimedia students added to the event helping with the cinematography, tickets and event programme.

Head of creative industries at the campus, Hayley Wilce said: "The show is an important opportunity for the students to share their skills and creativity with the wider community. Students worked hard on their interpretations to ensure the show was electric and exciting."

More than £600 is expected to be raised from the show which will be donated to the college’s nominated charity Teenage Cancer Trust.
