Suspected gunman found dead

GWENT Police confirmed tonight that the suspect in today's Malpas Road shooting was found dead. The body was found earlier in woods near Newport.

Local councillor Paul Cockeram said: "The salon is predominantly a more senior sort of hairdresser's salon. There would have been a lot of elderly people in there, I would have thought. They would have been extremely frightened.

"It's quite sad something like that has happened in my area because it's an area that we have no problems at all, but obviously these domestic incidents can happen anywhere.’’

POLICE advised drivers that the bottom of Malpas Road is still closed but thay can go north via the A4042 which will get them to the M4 westbound via the top end of Malpas Road.

Drivers can also use the same route to go eastbound on the M4 by travelling along Heidenhiem Drive and turning right at the first roundabout past Sainsburys.

South Wales Argus: MALPAS ROAD SHOOTING: Three women shot in hairdressers

GWENT Police say the man they are hunting after today's shooting is driving a grey Mini Cooper (pictured).

The car has registration number OE55 CVB and has black furry dice in the window.

If anyone sees this vehicle they are urged not to approach it but to instead call Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

TRAFFIC is backed up all the way to the motorway around Malpas with major delays in the city and motorway.

A cordon remnains in place on Malpas Road between Victoria Wine and the Harlequin roundabout.

Police officers are directing traffic and eyewitnesses say there is a Police presence on roundabouts on the motorway.

Malpas Road remains closed while police carry out their search.

Kataru Reddy, who works at the Shell petrol station opposite the Carol Ann's salon, said: "At around 2.30pm a man went into the shop. Soon after that I heard two gunshots and after that I heard shouting.’’

Mr Reddy said it took 10 minutes for the police to arrive in two vans and two cars. He said there were five police marksmen in the team but they had left.

Forensic officers have erected a blue screen at the scene. Forensic and Scene of Crime officers have been at the scene for 40 minutes.

Manhunt launched after shooting

The police helicopter is hovering over the scene and over woods near the Etap hotel. Gwent Police are also using dogs in the search on nearby Brynglas Drive.

Woman shot on Malpas Road

A WOMAN was shot on Malpas Road this afternoon police have confirmed.

Gwent Police received a call at around 2.20pm today reporting that three people had received injuries at a hairdressers on Malpas Road.

A man had entered a hairdressers with a firearm and a woman was shot in the knee and is wounded.

Another woman has a neck injury and another woman was injured in the arm. Police say the nature of these injuries has not been confirmed.

None of the injuries are life threatening and officers have recovered a firearm from the premises.

All three womens are receiving medical treatment and are currently with police officers.

Officers are now searching for the male involved and enquiries are on going.

Gwent Police have a team of officers working on the investigation and they are also at the scene.

Three women injured

THREE women have been injured in an incident on Malpas Road, Gwent Police say.

Police have cordoned off a 150 yard stretch of the road near the Harlequin Roundabout.

A police officer is standing outside Carol Anne's hairderssers which local people are saying is at the centre of the incident.

Some police officers have been seen wearing sidearms and there are six police cars and three vans at the scene.

THERE are reports of an incident on Newport's Malpas Road, near the Shell garage at the Harlequin Roundabout. Several police cars are at the scene.
