IN ADDITION to the damage and flooding to homes, businesses, farming and sport, etc. caused by the recent torrential rainfall, high winds and rising tides, all Newport public parks’ (Argus 13.2.14) grass football pitches have been swamped and local fixtures so far (148 games) have been postponed. Unfortunately this includes the Glebelands St. Julian’s Park, which is sodden and unplayable. Fortunately, the Villa Dino FC players who normally use a Glebelands Park pitch have been able to hire the Spytty Park 3G artificial pitch, costing the players £130 for one match. So how surprising and irresponsible that Newport’s Labour-led council is proposing to build 248 homes on the chemically-contaminated Glebelands Park site, which is a short distance from the high-rising River Usk with flooding an obvious risk.
