A MCDONALD'S restaurant in Newport is set for a major makeover after the city council approved renovation plans.

The fast-food restaurant in Spytty's Newport Retail Park will have two areas extended, as well as a new-look drive-through area and a new entrance.

There'll also be transformations inside, including a larger kitchen.

Council planners noted the McDonald's, which sits at the entrance to the retail park, near the Southern Distributor Road, is "well connected and accessible for pedestrians and vehicles".

The surrounding area is "considered as vibrant, with there being a lot of development and activity undertaken within the last few years", they added.

Earlier this summer, planners also approved the conversion a former Frankie & Benny’s restaurant in Newport into a Starbucks drive-through.

Planners noted the proposed renovations of the restaurant "do not result in any visual impact outside of the site".

In the car park, the spaces for blue badge holders will be moved to a different location, and a picnic table seating area near the existing entrance will be removed.

There'll also be more emphasis on the chain's "click-and-serve" ordering system, and planning documents show there will be more signs put up near the vehicle entrance to encourage customers to use the service.

The drive-through lane will be moved slightly, and customers will be able to order from two lanes before joining a single-file lane to pick up their food.

Neighbouring properties offered no objections to the proposals.

Approving the application subject to conditions, council planners said the proposed development "is considered to preserve the visual amenity and character and appearance of the area and matters of highway safety, flood risk and archaeology".
