WELSH Premier League club Carmarthen Town have announced that two of their hottest prospects are to spend next week on trial with Newport County AFC.
Striker Christian Doidge and utility man Luke Cummings both joined Carmarthen in January 2013 and are contracted until June 2015 so a transfer fee would need to be negotiated if either player is wanted by the Exiles.
Doidge has shot to prominence since arriving in the Welsh Premier after top scoring for Barry Town in the Welsh League in 2011/12.
The 21-year-old has also played for Croesyceiliog and Cwmbran Celtic has scored 18 goals from 33 WPL appearances, 16 of them this season.
Cummings, aged 22, is a right-sided defender or midfielder who hails from Merthyr and was previously given a trial by Bath City after being released by Cardiff City.
He then joined full-timers Neath in the summer of 2010 but, following the demise of the Eagles, joined Bath in June 2012.
Cummings then moved back to the Welsh Premier with Carmarthen and has made a total of 59 starts for the Old Gold.
County boss Justin Edinburgh revealed at Thursday night’s fans’ forum at Rodney Parade that he was keen to increase his scouting network.
“We've got a scout that reports on our opposition for us but we haven’t got scouts to look at potential new signings at the moment.
“We’re looking to extend our scouting network next season so we can discover the gems to come into this football club.”
Edinburgh has high hopes for young striker Joe Parker who will join the squad for next season.
“He’s our player,” said the Exiles boss. “He’s signed a contract for next season here and he’s in the very capable hands of Tim Harris at Gloucester at the moment.
“He comes and trains with us a few times a week so he’s familiar with the current squad.
“He’ll come in for pre-season and hopefully he can be the next Conor Washington.”
