JAMIE Roberts has no doubts that Wales midfield partner Tyler Morgan is the man to help topple the Springboks, declaring the Newport Gwent Dragons novice has an old head on young shoulders.

The 20-year-old from Caerleon will win his third cap in the World Cup quarter-final against South Africa at Twickenham, making his first Test appearance away from the Millennium Stadium.

Morgan has only played 23 times for the Dragons so will rely heavily on the vast experience of double Lion Roberts, who has 73 Wales caps to his name.

The Harlequins-bound powerhouse partnered the international novice in the Pool A victory against Fiji in Cardiff and says the signs were promising.

“I spoke after the Fiji game and said I felt he made some really good decisions on the ball and without it,” he said.

“He’s probably mature beyond his years. On the international stage that’s a good sign, young players making good decisions, especially give number of caps he has.

“So I think he’s ready for it. He’s physical, he’s young, he’s willing to learn, he’s energetic. He’s got all the attributes to help Wales win a World Cup quarter-final.

“It’s great that the coaches have backed him. He’s there to do a job and he knows the responsibility he has. It’s up to us to help integrate him as quickly as possible.”

And Morgan isn’t the only midfield novice in action – the Springboks combo of Damian De Allende and Jesse Kriel have just 18 international appearances to their name.

“They are both physical players, both athletes,” said Roberts. “They are both pretty special players and you have to find ways of targeting their inexperience.”

“Having played South Africa many times in my career, you have to match them physically before anything else,” continued Roberts.

“The way they play the game, if you lose the battle of the gain line you are 80 to 90 per cent towards losing the game.

“So that’s the challenge above all else, to get the mind right and put your bodies on the line for physical warfare.”
