NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have expressed their disappointment at the exit of Wales star Taulupe Faletau as they felt that a national dual contract was in the offing.
The Dragons hierarchy believed that the 25-year-old number eight was in advanced talks with the Welsh Rugby Union over the dual deal that would see him stay at Rodney Parade.
However, this morning Bath announced that the Pontypool-raised back row forward will be heading to the Rec at the end of the season.
“The Newport Gwent Dragons have today received confirmation from the player’s agent that Taulupe Faletau is to sign for Bath RFC from next season,” read a statement.
“This comes as extremely disappointing news for the club given our understanding that a National Dual Contract was being negotiated with the Welsh Rugby Union.”
A press conference is being held at the Dragons’ training base in Ystrad Mynach this afternoon where further comments will be made.
“The way Bath approach the game suits my style of play, which was a big factor in me wanting to join,” said Faletau.
“The opportunity to work with Darren (Edwards, Bath first team coach) again after doing so with Wales Under-20s and the Dragons was also too good to turn down. I’d like to thank Dragons for everything they’ve done for me in my career.”
In October the Dragons had asked the governing body for permission to sell their star to Bath for a six-figure transfer fee rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.
That was turned down and it seemed as though the decision would pay off when there was hope of the number eight staying in Wales.
However, now the Pontypool-raised back rower will now try his chances over the border after seeing out the season with his home region.
