NEWPORT County AFC are still in the market for one more player, manager James Rowberry has confirmed.

So far, eight new faces have arrived at Rodney Parade, with striker Omar Bogle the latest new addition after arriving from Hartlepool United for an undisclosed fee at the end of June.

Offrande Zanzala, Chanka Zimba (on loan), and Will Evans have also come in up front to replace the goals of last season’s golden boot winner Dom Telford.

And there’s been two players through the door in both defence – with Declan Drysdale and Adam Lewis – and midfield – with Sam Bowen and Aaron Wildig.

But with the season drawing closer, Rowberry confirmed that he’d like to make one more addition before the opening day trip to Sutton United on July 30.

“There’s still one more which is that attacking midfield player,” he said. “But like we’ve always said, the plan is agile, where you want one more, if it’s not, then it’s not.

“The plan is to make it one more, and if it’s more than one then sometimes that happens.

“But we’re pretty comfortable with the plan we’ve got in place with me and Darren (Kelly, sporting director) and the team.”

County’s academy players have featured with the first team so far this pre-season, with Harrison Bright, Lewys Twamley, Jack Karadogan, Joe Woodiwiss and Tom Stokes getting minutes at Undy

Rowberry said these players would continue to get a chance to work their way into his plans, instead of the club bringing in trialists ahead of the new campaign.

“No. You might end up getting one along the way but I don’t really operate that way,” he said when asked if we could expect to see any trialists turning out.

“I want to work with the lads that we’ve got.

“I think that’s important that we work with the players we’ve got in the building and give them our focus.

“We’ve got the development lads that we work with as well. We’ve got Jack Karadogan, Lewys Twamley, Even Ovendale, Harrison Bright and Joe Woodiwiss. I would class Harri as more of a senior player at this moment in time.

“We want to give them the attention as well.

“I think sometimes when you bring five or six trialists, it doesn’t always help what you’re trying to do.

“But you can never say never as you can never know how it ends up being.

“They’ll be involved in all the coming games likely up until the Forest Green game.

“They help us with what we’re trying to do. And obviously they’ve got an opportunity to try and excel as well.

“That’s what they have to remember. It’s really important for them.”

Bright, Karadogan and Ovendale all signed professional deals in May, with Bright making his first-team debut in County’s final game of the season against Rochdale.
