There was a strong police presence before Swindon Town’s clash with Newport County with officers convoying away fans to the stadium.

The two rivals came together at the County Ground on Saturday afternoon for their much-anticipated League Two encounter.

Town ran out winners on the day with goals from Dan Kemp and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy handing the Robins a valuable 2-0 home win.

Prior to even a ball being kicked, excitement was at fever-pitch for the derby with police officers, cars and vans being stationed across Swindon.

This was due to previous problems between the two sets of fans in recent years when the teams have played against each other.

Officers were marking the away fan hotspots for the route to the stadium which included the train station where as many as four police vans and three cars could be seen.

Moving onto Manchester Road and officers were dotted up and down the road, keeping watch and directing.

This all culminated as County Road was closed off for ten minutes by emergency vehicles while a large cohort of Newport supporters were conveyed to the ground by the police.

Singing matchday classic chants such as ‘Who are ya’, the fans made their way safely into the ground but it was Town who took the bragging rights by full-time.
