CRAIG Reid has expressed his delight at signing a new two-year deal with the Exiles, insisting he’s never been happier in his career than he is now.
The Blue Square South’s top goalscorer will once again spearhead the Exiles’ attack against Dover Athletic this afternoon and is among the frontrunners to be named player of the year by County’s supporters.
However, super strikers rarely go unnoticed and Reid admits he’s ignored interest from a host of other clubs to sign on the dotted line at Spytty Park, one of six players to do so this week.
He explained: “Yes, there have been quite a few inquiries about me and it’s very flattering to be honest.
“I had food for thought, but I am more than delighted to have secured my future here.
“More than money, more than what league I will be playing in, the most important thing is to be happy and I am very happy here.
“Playing for the club means a lot to me and the boys in the dressing room are my best mates as well.
“To be one of six signing, it’s a great feeling, because I hope everyone stays for next season.”
Reid believes he’s going to be ready for the step up and is looking forward to proving some doubters wrong.
“Obviously Grays didn’t think I was good enough for that level, they signed me and then didn’t really give me any chance,” he said.
“But they are a badly run club, and I don’t feel I have any point to prove. All my motivation comes from wanting Newport to do well.”
And Reid is keen to fire the goals that will see County clock up 100 points, a feat never achieved before in the Blue Square South.
“The gaffer wants to get to 100 and so do all the players, it’d be a great accolade and if we win and it’s all done and dusted on the day,” he said.
“Dover are in great form but we’ve been in great form all season and would love to cap it off at home.
“I was disappointed not to score in the Havant game (when County secured the title, Reid hitting the post before two Sam Foley goals) but that was Sam’s day and perhaps this time it will be mine.
“I’d love to get a couple of goals and take us to 100 points, but everyone is focused on that, because we can’t relax for another week and 180 minutes of football.”
