NEWPORT Market is well known for having lots of vendors in one place, bringing unusual ingredients and flavour combinations to Gwent residents.

With this in mind, we decided to stop at Ya Loukouma, described as a Greek artisan bakery. Ya Loukouma sells deli-style sandwiches, grab-and-go snacks, pies, honey dough balls (known as loukoumades) and a sugar-syrup dessert described as a 'cheesecake baklava'.

Cheesecake Baklava

If you're a fan of overly sweet desserts or want a dessert to share with friends and family, the cheesecake baklava at Ya Loukouma might be for you.

The dessert, which originates from the Middle East, has been layered with a tangy baked cheesecake topping and smothered in sugar syrup.

Even though I have a sweet tooth, this is overly sweet and can get sickly.

Saying that, sharing this after a meal with a hot drink would be ideal.

The baklava cheesecake costs £4.95 and is a sizeable portion for one person on their own, but could make a great sharing dessert for two or three people.

Cheese and pepperoni pastry

While I don't eat pepperoni, a colleague in the office tried this cheese and pepperoni pastry offering from Ya Loukouma.

They said: "The pastry was light and fluffy with a crunch. It wasn't overly greasy and had a moist texture.

"The pepperoni bit was overdone and you only got two slices, but it was full of flavour.

"The cheese was crisp and strong, perhaps a cheddar?

"For a pepperoni pizza/pastry, it wasn't heavy but surprisingly light! Well cooked."

Ya Loukouma can be found in Newport Market.
