THE NEWEST addition to Newport Market is Shmoles, a cheese coin maker known for their ‘cheese pulls’ – a concept that has gone viral, globally, all over social media.
At first glance, I thought - is this a gimmick? But I was shocked at how delicious the one coin was in particular, and I would definitely return.
The cheese stall offers four types of coin: Cheese (mozzarella and cheddar), Rainbow Cheese (rainbow mozzarella), Pizza (mozzarella, pepperoni and pizza sauce), and Hellfire (cheese, hot sauce and jalapeños).

The coolest coin, in customer Evie Elliot’s opinion, was the rainbow coin. The excited 10-year-old from Bettws came to the stall with her parents.
My personal favourite was the most popular, the pizza coin, which exceeded my expectations - it was delicious.
The owner of Shmoles, Alex Villis-Powell, 27, set up the business with his partner, Devon Hayes, 26, because they “proper love cheese” and were feeling inspired after a trip to Japan, where cheese coins are popular amongst tourists.
“We started off doing festivals and other markets, but now we are really happy to be open somewhere permanent, here in Newport Market. Things are going well so far and we are looking forward to the rest of our first weekend.”
Shmoles can be located as you enter from the front entrance, and then turn left. For fellow cheese lovers, you can grab a cheese coin from Alex every Friday or Saturday between 12-6pm and every Sunday between 12-4pm.
