IT'S fish Friday, so I ventured to a highly-rated local chippy, and here's what I thought.
Bina's Fish and Chips, located on Stow Hill in Newport, has been highly-rated in the Newport fish and chips scene, with some calling it 'THE best chippy in Newport'.
The shop offers your standard menu with a twist, ranging from regular to large fish and chips with options to choose between plaice, haddock or cod fish, fish cakes, pasties, pies, burgers and curries, along with standard sides like mushy peas, tartare sauce and a range of curry sauces.
Compared to other chippies, Bina's definitely offers one of the biggest menus, and this could be why the chippy has received a 4.4 rating on UberEats and a 4.1 rating on JustEat.
Prices at Bina’s range from £8 for a cod fillet, while a large cod, chips and mushy peas will set you back £12. A curry and chips will cost around £7.50.
In their latest food hygiene inspection which took place on February 22, 2024, Bina’s Fish and Chips received a 5 hygiene rating.
Flaky fish
To review Bina's, we ordered two large skinless cod with one large chips to share between two people, as well as the madras curry sauce. The order came to £26.50* for the four items.
The two large skinless cod were substantial in size - a third was leftover from one piece of fish, while someone hungry enough could devour the large cod fish with ease.
The order came with a big portion of the large chips, enough for two people or three (at a push).
Now, onto the review.
The chips were really fresh and you could taste the potato, a flavour which is sometimes masked when food establishments use old oil. Saying that, Bina's had a great flavour on the chips and were light in colour.
The only part that let it down, was how soggy the chips were. They weren't crispy, which I'm chalking up to how long it took to arrive.
The Bina's Fish and Chips order was placed at 9.13pm via UberEats and arrived at 9.52pm, after an 11-minute drive. That could easily explain why the chips were soggy, as they were steaming when they arrived.
Similarly, the fish edges were super crispy while the middle was soggy, presumably from the steam again. It arrived really hot though, and was well wrapped.
The fish was flaky, the batter had a more-ish taste, and a yellow tinge as if they had used turmeric in the fish coating. The fish from Bina's was quite chunky compared to other places, which serve thinner fillets of fish.
The highlight was the tangy madras sauce, which had a good kick of spice and paired beautifully with the fish and the chips. It was deep in colour, too.
Rating out of 10
While the order was quite soggy by the time it arrived, you could tell by the edges of the fish that it was crispy before steaming in the box.
Bina's deserves a solid 7 out of 10, though I'll eat it at a nearby park next time so it retains the crispiness.
Have you been to Bina's Fish and Chips? What did you think?
The meal was purchased, not gifted, and all views are my own.
