CHOOSING the tent: Family tents are ideal for novice campers. They’re easy to pitch and have plenty of space to move around in. Choosing a tent with sewn-in groundsheets maximises protection from insects and drafts.

Practice makes perfect: A practice camping trip is a good way to test the waters. Why not stay a night or two somewhere close to home or even in your backgarden – it’s great fun and a relief knowing your bathroom/kitchen are close by. It’s also a good way to familiarise yourself with pitching the tent.

Dress for success: Be prepared for any weather. Bring plenty of layers for the cool nights, and don’t forget to pack sun cream and baseball caps. Muddy puddles are fun but have a messy aftermath – be sure to bring along waterproof trousers and wellies.

Grubs up: Nothing beats cooking on the campfire or a BBQ in the great outdoors, but with peckish kids to worry about it’s best to pack some snacks. Why not bring along variety packs of cereal for a quick breakfast fix– pouring milk straight into the boxes will save on the washing up and kids will enjoy the novelty aspect.

Illumination: A headlamp is not essential but it can make after-dark chores a little easier. If your children sleep with a night light on at home, think about hanging a mini-flashlight in the tent in the evenings.

Sleep tight: Sleeping mats are a great choice for the entire family. As well as being lightweight and compact, they can be up to three times warmer than uninsulated air mattresses. Around 30 per cent of body heat is lost through your head, so why not invest in sleeping bags with hoods for the kids, to ensure they stay warm and sleep all through the night.

Get to know your neighbours: making friends with those around you is part of the fun for both you and the kids, so be sure to say hello to your fellow campers.

Safety first: A basic first aid kit is a must; essentials include a child thermometer and antibacterial cream. Colourful plasters will help the kids to quickly forget about any little grazes.

Perfect pitch: Check the surface you are camping on to make sure it’s sturdy and flat. Keep away from trees as the shade may make the area where you’re camping feel cool and there could be falling debris 10 And finally: don’t forget to have a great time – make the most of seeing nature’s beauty firsthand!
