A TENDER reworking of the Frankie Goes To Hollywood chart topper The Power Of Love by Gabrielle Aplin is out now on Parlophone Records.
Asked to record the song by John Lewis, Gabrielle was initially hesitant that she could bring her own voice to the classic track.
She said: “The lyrics are so strong and powerful, but the song is so intricate and beautiful - I was fascinated with the juxtaposition of it.
“What I really wanted to do was strip the production away, but keep the energy of the song. And I wanted it to be minimal and wintry. ”
Originally recorded for John Lewis during a session with David Kosten the single version was co-produced by Gabrielle’s current album producer and collaborator Mike Spencer.
By coincidence, the single entered the UK Top 40 Singles Chart on Sunday after 24 hours of download sales alone, almost 28 years to the day after the song’s original release on November 19, 1984.
With more than 13 million YouTube views of videos made for her previous three EPs already – including more than 2.5 million on her track Home, Gabrielle’s debut album is due for release in 2013, preceded by a new single Please Don’t Say You Love Me on February 10, 2013.
Gabrielle plays Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach on November 21, Visit clwb.net for ticket information.
