With a groove that never quits and a voice of incredible virtuosity, Gregory Porter has broken through the buzz to become the undisputed new star of vocal jazz.
Having cut his teeth on the local LA jazz scene, Porter moved across country to take one of the leads in the Broadway musical ‘It Ain't Nothing But the Blues’; dividing his time between the stage and weekly shows honing his craft at St. Nicks Jazz Pub in Harlem.
His first two albums ‘Water’ and ‘Be Good’ backed up the early buzz with deserved
Grammy nominations, as did his third album ‘Liquid Spirit’, his first on Blue Note Records, which recently won the Best Jazz Vocal Album award at the 2014 Grammys.
A charismatic stage performer, Porter’s rapid rise has been fueled by his irresistibly soulful voice, inspiring many critics to offer comparisons with the greatest of the greats, such as Joe Williams, Nat Cole, Donny Hathaway, and Marvin Gaye.
As flattering as such comparisons are, Gregory Porter’s magnificent voice is very much his own, and we look forward to welcoming him to the Hall in November.
