AN ABERGAVENNY firm will help build a £250 million motorsport development planned for Ebbw Vale.

Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd will work with world-renowned FCC Construccion to deliver the Circuit of Wales set to transform the landscape of Rassau and bring 9,000 jobs.

The Heads of the Valleys Development Company (HVDC) behind the scheme said the two companies offered a perfect complement of international expertise and local knowledge.

Martyn Evans, director of Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, which helped build the Celtic Manor Resort's 2010 Ryder Cup course and helped reopen the Ebbw Valley railway line, said it was a huge honour to be involved.

He said: "This is the sort of project that will change lives in Blaenau Gwent, as well as people's perception of the area. We're thrilled to be a part of it."

"The people of Wales, and Blaenau Gwent in particular, should be really excited about what will be built."

FCC Construccion's previous projects include the Madrid-Barajas Airport - one of the world's busiest airports - and the Circuit of Jerez in Andalusia, Spain, which is a particularly popular circuit among racing fans and riders.

Michael Carrick, chief executive of the HVDC said that having seen the work of the construction partners he had no doubt the Circuit of Wales will be a "diamond in the British sporting landscape." He added: "We chose these companies because of their vast experience, global renown and because of the superb team they can put in place.

"They fully grasp the Circuit of Wales concept and how to deliver it and share our vision and passion for making it happen. A promise has been made by both firms that a significant number of construction jobs will go to local workers, which would provide a much-needed boost for the area where unemployment rates are high."

A planning application for the scheme, which will include a 3.5 mile race track, karting and motorcross tracks, a race academy and technology park, is expected in November.
