NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh is entirely justified in bemoaning the relatively poor attendance for his team’s 6-2 win on Tuesday night.

Those who stayed away from Rodney Parade would not have known before the match, of course, that County were about to record their most emphatic and entertaining win of the season.

But they would have known that County were top of the league.

So we find the fact the game was played in front of the smallest home league crowd of the season puzzling.

Yes, County had lost a couple of matches in the previous fortnight including an FA Cup exit at the hands of minnows Yate Town.

But should a couple of defeats, while remaining at the top of the league, justify such an attendance?

Newport County are in their centenary season, fresh from a first appearance at Wembley, and relishing their new Rodney Parade home.

They sit proudly at the top of the non-league pyramid with a real chance of returning to the Football League.

Crowds should be flocking to watch them play.

We hope Tuesday’s attendance was merely a blip rather than a more worrying indication of the future.

Let’s hope Rodney Parade is packed to the rafters for the next home game against Hyde on November 17.
