POSTCARD-sized artworks created by artists as young as 13 are on display at Barnabas Arts House, Newport.

Janet Martin, owner and curator of the New Ruperra Street gallery, created 400 postcard-sized frames from discarded pieces of wood a few years ago when she was snowed in at her nearby shop, Gwent Picture Framing.

She then challenged artists and the general public to create works to fill the space, rather than the other way around, she explained.

“We sell them for no commission and hang them for free,” said Ms Martin.

“It is an ongoing original miniature gallery called Postcards from the Edge, and we have already sold 20 pieces.”

There are 100 pieces on show, by artists ranging from 13 to 85-years-old, with the most expensive piece by Royal Academy artist Philip Muirden costing £50.

“It is the ultimate in recycling,” said Ms Martin.

“We have artworks from Bristol, Swansea, and we have advertised the concept on the internet.

“People have gone nuts for it.”
