UPDATE: 10.00am
A FIRE at a Newport waste firm is still smouldering this morning, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service say.
Crews spent much of yesterday tackling the blaze, which affected up to 600 tonnes of landfill type material at Able Skips, on Nash Mead on the Leeway Industrial Estate.
The number of firefighters at the scene has been scaled down this morning, with one engine currently there.
At the height of the incident, which affected around 85% of the building, 23 firefighters were called to the scene.
A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We are liaising with Natural Resources Wales, who are providing support and helping to minimize any potential impact to the environment. In addition to this Newport City Council are working with Natural Resources Wales to provide the assistance needed to help us deal with the incident.”
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
