FIREFIGHTERS are trying to find the best way into a waste firm’s building after it caught fire at the weekend.
Up to 600 tonnes of landfill type material at Able Skips, Nash Mead, was still smouldering well into the afternoon yesterday, more than 24 hours after it began.
Crews were originally called at 2.10pm on Sunday to a fire outside the business, but several hours later they were requesting extra help as flames spread to 85 per cent of the building.
Yesterday a South Wales Fire and Rescue spokesman said crews had not been in the building yet and they had fought the fire from outside.
He told the Argus there was a large amount of rubble in the fire which was causing a health and safety issue.
Another site visit this morning will determine the best way forward.
One fire engine remained at the scene yesterday.
Police reassured residents the smoke was not toxic, but that doors and windows should be closed as much as possible.
A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We are liaising with Natural Resources Wales, who are providing support and helping to minimise any potential impact to the environment. In addition to this Newport council are working with Natural Resources Wales to provide the assistance needed to help us deal with the incident.”
A total of 23 firefighters attended at the height of the blaze.
Eyewitnesses on Sunday could see a hydraulic platform was being used to fight the fire from above.
No cause was known as the Argus went to press last night.
Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting log number 381 7/7/13.
