IT WAS a Royal affair in Pontypool as thousands of people descended on the town centre to enjoy this year’s carnival.

As temperatures soared, organisers said they expected around 12,000 people to pass through the gates throughout the day on Saturday as the town celebrated 60 years since the Queen’s coronation.

A parade themed around kings and queens past and present kicked off the celebrations with adults and youngsters fromlocal organisations making their way from the Riverfront car park, through the town centre and into Pontypool park.

Families lined the streets to watch the parade which included the likes of New Inn Primary School and Torfaen play service.

Among the sights were youngsters dressed in crowns and gowns, giant playing cards and handmade Royal coaches.

Musicians including Pontypool Brass Band also battled the heat as they performed to add to the excitement of the event.

The entertainment then continued with stalls, rides and music in Pontypool park.

Play policy officer at Torfaen play service, Andrea Sysun said: “It was a great experience. We had around 75 children taking part from Penygarn, Abersychan and The Garn play clubs.

Carnival queen, Natasha Williams, 16, helped lead the parade.

She said: “It has been a great day. It was really hot but has all been worth it.”

Group leader of economy, renewal and culture at Torfaen council, Dave Evans said: “It has been fantastic. It is great that so many people and so many families have got involved and this has become a real focal point of the community.

“Wewant to continue this and build on it.”
