A NEWPORT family is holding a fun day to raise awareness of a rare condition that affects one in 30,000 children in the UK.

The family of three-year-old Fallon Maynard decided to hold the event at the YMCA Conference Centre, Newport to highlight the work of the charity Dravet Syndrome UK.

Ceri Maynard, 34, and her partner Oliver Jones, 25, of Lliswerry Road, Alway, are waiting for her Fallon to be tested for the neurological condition which leaves children with impaired language skills and mobility skills.

Fallon has been unable to speak or walk since suffering a serious of severe seizures in 2010 when he spent ten days in the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.

She said: "Before he fell ill he could run around in his walker but now cat walk or stand unaided, speak or feed himself."

"We need to know if he has the condition so that we can get the right treatment to improve his condition.

"Dravet Syndrome UK has provided great support and information to my family."

Fally's Fun Day takes place today at the YMCA Conference Centre, Mendalgief Road, Newport between 1pm and 7pm. There will be a bouncy castle, face-painting, barbecue and dance workshops. Entry is £3 adults and £1 children.
