UPDATE 7.19pm: The 44-year-old driver of the VW Golf is awaiting treatment for injuries in Nevill Hall hospital.
Gwent Police confirmed there is no change in his condition. The female passenger from the Ka is also still in hospital being treated.
A PENSIONER has died following a road traffic accident last night.
The 78-year-old man was driving a silver Ford KA along the A40 when it was in a collision with a VW Golf between Raglan and Abergavenny around 9.30pm.
He died as a result of the crash, while his female passenger was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital where she is in a stable condition this morning.
The 44-year-old driver of the Golf has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries.
The cars were travelling in the same direction before the accident, which closed the road for around ten hours.
Fire crews from Abergavenny, Monmouth and Malpas attended and cut the three people out of the cars.
Police are appealing for the driver of a Ford Transit van or similar, which was believed to be travelling in the same direction when the collision occurred, to come forward.
Anyone with information should dial 101.
