TWO weeks ago we reported that a nine-year-old boy was "heartbroken" after his bike was stolen on his birthday.
Now he’s had a belated birthday present after his bike was brought back home.
A kind-hearted neighbour saw the article in the Argus and recognised the bike when he saw it dumped in the street.
He did not want any recognition for his kind deed, but made sure the bike was safe before stopping Rhys’s mother Lindy Davis , 43, to tell her where she could pick it up.
Rhys Davis, 9, said: "I was over the moon. I’ve been riding around Maesglas and around my street and Tredegar Park. I’ll put it in the back garden next time!"
Mrs Davis said: "Somebody obviously saw the article and just left it in the street. I just hoped somebody would, when they knew it was his, just dump it somewhere where it could be found."
She said the bike being returned had made a little boy very happy.
Rhys, who goes to Maesglas Primary School, had been riding his silver BMX around Tredegar Park with his older brother David to celebrate turning nine on July 9.
As he and his brother arrived back home late after dropping their friends back at home, they left the bike in the front garden to get inside and go to bed.
But when Rhys woke up in the morning, he realised his bike was gone from the Bideford Road garden in Maesglas.
The BMX Anaconda was given to him as a Christmas present in 2011. Parents Lindy and Kev bought it from Tesco for £150, but say the sentimental value is priceless.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "A child's silver BMX bike was reported stolen from an address on Bideford Road Newport on 10 July. The bike was taken from the front garden of the address between 8.45pm on July 9 and 7.15am July 10.
