THERE was a party atmosphere in Monmouth today as the crowds poured in for the town's annual carnival.
Around 3,000 people enjoyed watching a colourful array of floats make their way through the centre, amongst plenty of food and craft stalls from 2pm.
Throngs of adults and children followed with representations from Busy Bees, Monmouth Town Football Club, the Savoy Theatre and Wyesham Wanderers.
The Spirit of Monmouth, the town's alternative to a carnival queen, was Lena Lightly, who rode down in a sports car.
Organisers Monmouth Festival reported a strong attendance and new aspects this year, including extra vintage vehicles and a double decker bus.
Town mayor Jeana Hall took great delight in handing out prizes on the main stage, in categories like 'best walking group' and 'best vintage vehicle.'
She said: "It's the best carnival I have seen, it is magic."
The parade, led by the Severnside Silver Dragons, marched to the festival site off Monnow Street, which was full of rides and more stalls.
The entertainment carried on well into the evening on the main stage with bands Sugar Mama and tribute act Oasis UK.
