A CHILDREN’S sports pitch, closed for three years due to a dispute between Newport City Council and Bellway Homes, has finally opened, in time for a fun day this Saturday.
Now children on the Alway estate are able to play football, basketball, netball and tennis in the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA).
The adjacent community centre has only been able to open up for one weekend since it was built – for a community fun day.
Last month the Argus reported how around 50 children and parents from the estate held a protest, pleading with the council to let children have the use of the floodlit playground, instead of just having to look at it through fencing.
After a three-year wait the keys were finally handed over last week. Debbie Harvey, councillor for Alway, said: “It’s all open now.
Everyone is over the moon.”
The fun day this Saturday will run from 10am until 4pm and will include BBQ food.
