A NEW councillor has been elected to serve the Southville ward in Cwmbran.
Cwmbran community council held a by-election on July 25, with Robert Jones of the Welsh Labour party receiving the majority with 74 votes.
Kathleen Thomas from the Welsh Conservative Party received 23 votes and Marcus Warner of Plaid Cymru received 26 votes.
Cllr Jones, 79, is a former Torfaen councillor, serving for eight years, and within his time in office was Mayor for the borough.
He was also on the planning committee and housing committee.
The ex-Royal Marine says he has faith in youngsters’ ability, having taught youths to swim, and he would like to see more done for the young in his ward.
He said: “I would like to thank everyone who has helped me to achieve this.
“After taking retirement, I now want to put my spare time to some good use.
“I wish to hear what the local people want to change and work for the people.”
