A MONMOUTHSHIRE village is going for gold in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition.
Usk is one of three places in Wales to reach the UK finals of Europe’s biggest community gardening campaign alongside Colwyn Bay and Prestatyn.
After months of preparation by 28 dedicated volunteers who have put the finishing touches to the many displays, tubs and barrels the judges will arrive in the ‘town of flowers’ on Tuesday.
More than 20,000 volunteers from 77 small villages, towns and cities across the UK are taking part in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom competition.
In Wales alone, finalist volunteers manage more than 7,000 acres of public green space, contributing nearly 5,000 hours of work, and last year, planting 15,000 plants.
Each finalist will be judged on community participation, environmental responsibility and horticultural achievement.
The winners will be awarded a gold, silver-gilt, silver or bronze. There is also an award for best in category.
Last year Usk won the large village category in Wales in Bloom for a record 31 years in a row.
Roger Burnett, an RHS Britain in Bloom judge, said: “We cannot wait to see what Wales has in store for us this year.
“It’s always such a huge pleasure meeting bloom volunteers and seeing the great work they’ve done.
“They are passionate people who work tirelessly, come rain or shine, to improve their local areas.”
The judges will visit Usk on August 6 and the winners will be announced on October 12.
