TODDLERS shouted and laughed as a traditional Punch and Judy showwas set up in Newport city centre for a fun day yesterday.
Carl the Magic Man, from Ebbw Vale, put on the puppet show in Commercial Street, and in between performances made balloon models for the audience.
Batman and Hello Kitty wandered around shaking hands with children and having their pictures taken, despite looking hot inside their costumes beneath a scorching sun.
The free event lasted from 11am to 3.30pm and drew a large crowd of parents and children, and even several pensioners nostalgic for the old days.
Geoff Turner, 70, stopped to watch the puppet show. He said: “I haven’t seen Punch and Judy in 20 years. When I used to go to the seaside I used to go and watch it. It’s beautiful.”
Ella Wheeler, 25, from Maindee, came along with her two daughters.
She said: “My girls have absolutely loved it. It’s quite old fashioned – it’s something I remember from when I was a child and when my parents were children.”
The violent puppet show depicts marital troubles between Mr Punch and his wife Judy.
Five-year-old Layla-Grace said: “My favourite part was when he whacked him.”
Commercial Street was packed with shoppers, many of whom slowed down to watch the show.
Children wandered away having sword fights with balloon weapons and cradling balloon sausage dogs.
The day was organised by Newport council.
