NEWPORT County’s promotion to the Football League may not have as great an economic impact as in other parts of South Wales, an economic expert said.
Jonathan Deacon, a reader into entrepreneurship at the University of South Wales, has been studying the possible effects of County’s rise to League Two for the past two or three months.
He said: "The economic impact to the city will be positive, there’s no doubt about that.
"The scale of it will however will have to be put in some context. It will not be on the same level as Swansea or Cardiff, we have to be up front about that.
"However, the impact will be two-fold. There is the indirect impact of people using the city’s name and Newport will be appearing more often in the sporting press.
"The direct impact revolves around the fact that people are talking positively about the city and the football club which is great.
"Research done recently by the Welsh Government shows the importance of the feel-good factor.
"Moving to Rodney Parade has definitely improved this because it’s right in the middle of the city centre and created a real buzz around the place."
