WHAT a comeback! We might have been waiting 25 years but Saturday’s emphatic victory by Newport County AFC made the long wait worthwhile.
And the 4-1 win was a just reward for the thousands of fans who turned out to be part of the team’s first league match for quarter of a century.
They were treated to a cool and clinical performance by a side which has lost none of its ambition.
And if there were any in the team feeling the pressure because of the sense of occasion, they hid it well.
Justin Edinburgh rightly pays tribute to his team today, who outperformed their opponents at every step. And he says that they can now concentrate on football instead of the occasion and history.
Of course the season will be full of as many downs as ups – any supporter of any football team, at whatever level, knows that all too well.
But such a confident and successful start is a great way to make an entrance to league football and sends a warning shot to all other teams in the division.
Newport County deserve their place.
In times past Rodney Parade had a reputation as a fortress for rugby.
The trick now is to make it work the same magic for football, with opposing teams and fans dreading their visits to Newport – for all the right reasons.
