THE weekend saw Caldicot Castle play host to an 18th century living camp, The Soldiers of George III.

The re-enactment showed visiting families what life was like for British soldiers living at the time of the American War of Independence.

The event was held on both Saturday and Sunday, with people braving the the wet weather on the second day to see His Majesty’s Crown Forces and their special blend of military prowess, scruffy recruits, good humour and one loud cannon.

This year, children were allowed to join a drill to see if they had what it takes to join the regiment.

As part of the entertainment, The Soldiers of George III put on two commentated infantry and artillery displays.

There were around a dozen authentically attired soldiers and a small number of female participants within the camp, and there was also a special ‘children’s participation period’ when officials instruct the youngsters in the use of imitation muskets.

A castle spokeswoman said: “Everyone has had a wonderful time and quite a few braved the weather to come and see the re-enactment.”
