A BLAENAVON company came up trumps at this year’s International Cheese Awards.
Held on July 31, in Nantwich, 600 cheese makers, from tiny artisan producers to big brands, competed in the 115-year-old event, which attracts 40,000 visitors annually.
Among those displaying their produce was Blaenafon Cheddar Company, the family run company from Broad Street in Blaenavon.
Susan Fiander-Woodhouse, who opened the company with her husband Gerry in 2006, said: “We entered eight cheeses in total but as we heard there was 2,444 individual cheese entries, and it was our first time competing at the awards, we didn’t think we stood a chance.
“So when I heard we had won I was bursting to tell everyone as it is the biggest cheese awards in the world.”
The Caws Angel, which is matured in the caves at Dan yr Ogof, won gold for the 100 per cent goat cheese category.
It now has three gold awards.
