UPDATE: 3.46
A 38-YEAR-OLD woman is receiving hospital treatment after falling around 25 feet from a second floor flat.
The incident happened at around 11.10am this morning, when witnesses described hearing screams on Upper Dock Street, Newport.
One witness described a man trying to hold the woman as she hung out of the window. But, despite him grappling with her for a number of minutes, she then fell on to the ground below.
An eyewitness said: "He just couldn’t manage to hold her. She dropped, hit the roof and shutters before landing on the ground. We all thought she’d be gone, but she was breathing and looked around."
The flat is above the former Glamour and Glitz shop that is now closed, with workers from the Strawberry Water Junk Company and Coffee Shop opposite running out.
John Kerr, who owns the Strawberry Water Junk Company, said: "I heard a lot of screaming and shouting, so came running out.
I just saw the woman fall past the sign and then hit the floor. Lots of people then ran around her."
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police confirmed the woman had fallen from a second floor window and is at Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital, where her injuries are being assessed.
A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault following the incident, but he was released later without charge.
