YESTERDAY’S events were another shock to a city left reeling by the Malpas Road shooting two years ago this month in which mum-of-two Rachel Williams survived a gun attack by her husband.

Darren Williams shot the hairdresser in her left leg at the Carol Ann Hair Salon on August 19, 2011, before going on to kill himself.

Mrs Williams tried to wrestle the gun from her attacker when he entered the salon on Malpas Road. He shot her, told her he loved her, then aimed the double-barrel gun at her again but the cartridge rebounded, injuring shop owner Carol Ann Sheedy and 92-year-old customer Connie Evans.

Mr Williams fled the scene and was found hanged in woodland in the city five hours later.

In the weeks leading up to the shooting, Mr Williams was granted bail after assaulting his wife on July 9, despite objections by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Posting on the Argus website yesterday, Mrs Williams said: “I would like to send out my sincere sympathy to this poor lady’s family.

“I would like to ... know where the gun came from in this tragic event. Two years on I am still waiting to know where my estranged husband got the sawn-off shotgun he used on me.

“I have had no updates or any correspondence with regards this from Gwent Police.

“It will be interesting to see if this poor innocent victim had dealings with the police prior to this awful tragedy.”
