A FATHER and his two sons were given prison sentences after admitting their part in a Newport stabbing.

Jerome Nunes, 22, his brother Blaine Nunes, 21, and father Roy Nunes, 47, all of Hammond Drive, Newport, admitted their part in the attack on Shaka Griffiths at Newport Retail Park on February 22.

Cardiff Crown Court heard how Mr Griffiths and his pregnant girlfriend parked in the car park of the McDonald’s restaurant in Spytty around 6pm when he was approached by Blaine Nunes.

CCTV footage played to the court showed the pair talking but minutes later Jerome and Roy Nunes pulled up in a car next to them.

The father and son got out of the car and joined by Blaine they chased Mr Griffiths to a nearby roundabout where Jerome stabbed him in the right buttock with an unknown "sharp implement".

Mr Griffiths ran into McDonald’s saying he had been stabbed and was treated by staff until paramedics arrived and took him to Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital.

Andrew Morse, prosecuting, said Mr Griffiths, of Bristol, refused to co-operate with the police and therefore the details, reasons and background to the attack may never be known.

In the course of the investigation police searched the Nunes’ house and found 16 immature cannabis plants growing and seized £1,630 cash.

Fully-grown the plants would have yielded 640 grams with an estimated street value of £6,400, the court heard.

Jerome Nunes pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding on the basis he perceived Mr Griffiths to be a threat to his brother and did not intend to cause him serious injury. Blaine and Roy admitted one count of affray in relation to the incident. Blaine also pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis at an earlier hearing.

Robert Duval, defending Jerome Nunes, said this type of behaviour was uncharacteristic for the father-of-one, who had only one other conviction for violence.

Sarah Waters, for Roy Nunes, said the Newport council refuse worker did not make any contact with the victim during the incident and only took part in the chase.

Eugene Egan, mitigating for Blaine Nunes, said his client's case was similar in that he never came within touching distance of Mr Griffiths and it was the threat or violence rather than any action.

Jerome Nunes was given 11 months, Blaine six months for affray and two months consecutive for the drugs charge.

Roy Nunes was sentenced to 20 weeks, The three have already served time on remand so will either be released immediately or very soon, the court heard.
