A CENTRE for children and young people with disabilities in Newport opened its doors on Saturday for a charity fete.

A new play area at the centre was also officially opened.

Several hundred people attended the day at the Serennu Children’s Centre, Rogerstone, which went on until around 4pm.

There were stalls, games, a bouncy castle and cakes, baked in aid of the Argus-backed Sparkle Appeal, the charity behind the centre.

Guests left with home-made goodies and a better understanding of the centre’s work.

Chris Evans, councillor for Rogerstone, attended the fete and took advantage of the entertainment, earning a certificate for his efforts playing beat the goalie.

Mr Evans said: “People had a jolly good time. It’s great to have a facility like the Serennu Centre on our doorstep, but often people don’t know what goes on.”

He added it was nice for local people to get a chance to see the centre and realise the good work it does. Mayor Cliff Suller also spent several hours at the event.

The centre opened in April 2011 and provides care, treatment and activities for children and young people with disabilities and developmental difficulties from Newport, south Monmouthshire and south Torfaen.
