The photo is of Upper Dock St, Newport in the 1960's. The barrow in the foreground belonged to AA Wright whose main premises was on the corner of the market entrance.

On the left hand side of the picture is the main bus station with one bus parked & another just leaving. Just in front of the pick-up truck was Trace's paint & wallpaper shop. The building in the centre of the photo is Olympia House where the Passport Office was.

Olympia House was built on the site of the Olympia cinema, a little further along was the store where AA Wright ripened their bananas and were small schoolboys could (with a bit of luck) find large, hairy, foreign spiders.

Noticeable are the number of pedestrians in the 'Then' photo compared to the 'Now' picture.

The Now and Then picture is of Upper Dock Street near the entrance to Newport market where Harry Wheeler Fruit and Veg used to be, it is now a hair salon.

On the corner of Griffin Street is the Capital taxi rank, and opposite that was Tracy’s wallpaper shop which has now closed and is currently a food store.

Further up the street is a small cafe and opposite is Lovells restaurant, whilst on the corner is an arcade for gaming machines. There used to be a tobacconists opposite, but that, too, has now closed as has the wedding gown store that came after it.

On the corner of Skinner Street is Jeffreys Jewellers and next to that is the Passport office. Many years ago it used to be the Olympia cinema.

Opposite this building is The Potters pub and The also The Windsor. Nowadays, nearby the new bus station is being built.

The Now and Then scene is taken from the top of Dock Street. On the left of the scene is where the bus pull-in used to be, and the bus standing there looks like the bus to Maesglas.

The advert hanging on the wall is a beer advertisement for Mitchell and Butlers Brewery. The white building in the centre of the picture is Olympia House where the passport office was situated.

I would date the picture as late 1950s.

Gordon Stewart, Newport The scene in your your Now and Then pictures is Market Square , Upper Dock Street, Newport.

In the Then picture, two Newport Corporation buses are pulling out of the bus pull-in. This opened in 1949, prior to which buses departed from street all over the town including Corn Street, Baneswell Road, Cambrian Road and High Street.

This bus pull-in was closed in 1974 and a new bus terminal opened in Dock Street where the present terminal is situated.

On the left in the Now picture you can just see the steel framework for the new structure that will accommodate bus passengers. According to the illustrations outside Wildings, this will simply be a canopy roof with little protection for passengers.

On the left in both pictures is shops, and central is Olympia House, just out of sight is Newport Market.
